Finding Your Dream Job

Creating A Detailed Description

Do you only have a vague idea of what you would love to do for a living? When asked, most people say they have little or no idea what their dream job is. Yet, in order to find the perfect job you first need to know what you are looking for.

So how do you transform a list of interesting professions or subjects you were good in at school into the job of your dreams? It starts with having a universal recipe for work anyone can use. We then add in 100 insightful questions that reveal your own personal list of essential ingredients. The results are amazing -- a list of 30+ ingredients which describes your ideal work -- which you can use to fine tune your resume, target high potential companies and ace your interviews.

But the best way to give you an idea of what our Discover Your Dream Job Guidebook can do for you is show you a before and after example.

Let's start with where you probably are right now. See if this sounds like how you would describe your perfect job or dream business (but with your own personal details in the parentheses).

School Subjects & Professions (Before Example)

I have always wanted to do something about ... (saving wildlife). When I was growing up, I ... (watched all the nature shows and poured over National Geographic magazine) for hours. I love ... (being around animals) so for a while I thought I wanted to work ... (in a zoo). I also thought about being a ... (chef), but decided it wasn't right for me. My best subject in school was ... (writing), so I got a college degree in ... (English) and now I am working in ... (an advertising firm).

How I Would Like To Impact The World (Before Example)

My ideal job would be working to ... (help save endangered species). I would love to ... (create animal stories) that would help people ... (understand how important animals are and how much they are like us). [All my ... (nieces and nephews) beg me to ... (make up bedtime stories) and I love to ... (see their eyes light up) when I ... (put them into the stories!)] I would also like to be able to ... (travel the world to observe animals in their natural habit).

If these sound like how you would describe your ideal career, you are in good company. Most of us talk about the ideas we have had, our favorite subjects in school. But what we lack is the detail, clarity and confidence we need -- to train and interview for our dream job -- or invest our life savings into starting that business we are always dreaming about.

Creating A Detailed Description

A dream job can't be described by the ideas that did not pan out. Instead, you need a job description that is focused on work you excel at. A description so compelling and "doable" that you want to make it a reality. One that stirs your heart and makes sense at the same time. One that reveals why your dream job is not only possible, but something you can easily excel at and be well paid for.

That might seem like a tall order, but we have spent a lot of time figuring out how to create a process that creates that kind of dream job description. In the end, we came up with a recipe for dream jobs anyone can use to create a list of key ingredients for their ideal work. To go along with this recipe, we developed 100 insightful questions which reveal each person's own personal ingredients and fill in the blanks.

A List of Key Ingredients (After Example)

Answering our questions and analyzing the answers creates a detailed list of ingredients. Below is an example of the results, grouped into life paths to help show you how these diverse skills and ideas fit together into career groups. (And don't worry, we aren't revealing anyone's secret dream job here ... this is a fictional example. But we sure would like to meet anyone who fits this description!)

Take a moment and imagine looking for your dream job, scanning help wanted and job board ads. How much would a list like this transform your search? How much is it worth to know exactly what your dream job looks like? If you were interviewing for the perfect job, would a list like this help you ace the interview and land the job?
