The Apology of
Socrates
Long Conversations and SMall Minds
It is rare in recorded history that a well respected figure refers openly to the inner voice that has guided their life. But in Socrates' last statement, which was recorded by two close and respected friends (Aristotle and another), her refers to "a female friend" which has always spoken to him warning him of how to avoid danger, and the fact that since it is not advising him to hold back, he is open to sharing its existence at this, his last public speaking opportunity.
Interesting too, is the title of his speech. It is an "apology", but contains nothing of what that title would hint at. He does not acknowledge he has done wrong ... quite the contrary. Nor does he ask forgiveness for his trespasses. Instead he reveals things about himself that he has kept hidden ... and which have helped him live a life twice as long as his peers.
